Having said all that, I consider these as PART of my tool kit which complements Articulate and Storyline. Fortunately, this tool meets the vast majority of my needs without a huge budget or learning curve. Depending on how sophisticated you want to be, you can accomplish quite a lot. It has a lot of video and audio editing features that can get you into production mode very quickly. I get REALLY good detail captures like this.Ĭamtasia is a good tool to throw a nice video together. Then, grab what I need with SnagIt, and whittle away in the editor.

I zoom in on the pdf until the part I want fills the screen. SnagIt is especially nice for zooming in on a fine resolution pdf file that has a graphic element that I want to focus on some small segment of. It also handles the issue of transparency for the image background and the ability to save in many useful formats. Mine is setup to automatically launch the SnagIt Editor, which offers many features that allow me to make whatever edits I choose, before I actually save the file to my library. It allows me to save all, or a selected portion, of the screen. I keep SnagIt in my startup sequence so that it is always sitting there, just waiting for me to hit the "Print Screen" key. As "a mac" pointed out, they are separate tools for different purposes. On top of that, you have a set of drawing tools that give you everything you need to call attention to parts of your screenshot, provide sequential steps, and block out any parts you want to hide. Both SnagIt and Camtasia are Techsmith products. This allows you to open drop-down menus so you can really show what to select from menus. You click the screenshot button and then have a set amount of time to get the screen how you want it. One of the best parts is that you can do timed screenshots. It regularly saves me having to spend time on the phone, in chat, or in person. At least once a week I fire up ScreenSteps to create step-by-step instructions for some task that they need to perform. Many of my customers are not technically inclined at all, and really need visual guidance. Now., I work from home and one of my jobs is to provide technical support to various clients. As far as I know, the majority of that documentation is still used, and what new documents they have available were also produced with ScreenSteps. When I first started using ScreenSteps, I was teaching at a middle school that had a 1:1 laptop program.

“Being a Mac user, it's a tough sell to have Mac only programs, because one of my bosses is a PC user.In ScreenSteps we easily move from the capture to documentation to publishing in just a few minutes.” - Michael Morrison, Director of Technology Services, Saddleback Valley Unified School District But with other tools the process from capture to documentation takes quite a few steps. Imagine my amazement as I realized that ScreenSteps actually replaces Microsoft Word in creating documentation! No more fighting with word wrap around images, no more wondering why the image suddenly jumped to the end of the file or other annoyances!” - Allison Sheridan, NosillaCast Mac Podcast I love the category, but with a yawn I gave it a try. “I had lots of screen snapshot apps (I did a whole show about them once) so I thought this was yet another one.If I get a customer who's confused, I simply rev up my ScreenSteps and in 10 minutes that customer has a clear idea of what to do next.” - Sean D'Souza, With Screensteps it was, and has always been a breeze. Then format them, and before I knew it 45 minutes had passed. Normally I'd have to take screenshots then put them in some word-based application. I was able to write documentation in a matter of 10 minutes or less. “I didn't think I needed "yet another screen capture" application. What surprised me was that ScreenSteps was completely different.
